Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act History The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009 was signed into law by President Barack Obama, January 29, 2009. The purpose and goal of the Lilly Ledbetter Act is to amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This Ledbetter Act states that the 180-day statue of limitations for filing an equal-pay lawsuit regarding pay discrimination resets with each new paycheck affected by that discriminatory action. Since there was many educational opportunities for women it began to lead more and more women to find their potential meaningful of their individual professional career. Also women 's salaries increased but not to the amount that men received. Even though women did not quite make as much as men do, it still felt like a huge accomplishment because it was much better circumstances than they had before. In 1972 the Equal Rights Amendment passed which lingered around congress for nearly fifty-five years. The wording of the ERA was simply understood: “Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.”
They were building on it every day but at that time it was more pressure for the woman to stay home and take care of the family rather than work. Women were still getting paid significantly less at the time and jobs were taken over by men. But there was a lot of work at that time that helped pass the equal pay laws.”
During and after the Civil War, women’s demand in job keeps increasing. They desired to work and be independent, which means they tried to have more identities, except for housewife. Moreover, they desired to own equal pay and equal opportunities in workplace, compared to men. Quested for decades, Congress finally passes the Equal Pay Act of 1963, as part of Fair Labor Standard Act of 1938, for prohibiting employers wage discriminating employees based on gender. Equal Pay Act of 1963 specifically regulates that “No employer having employees subject to any provision of this section shall discriminate, within any establishment in which such employees are employed..at which requires equal skill, effort, and responsibility, and which requires equal similar working conditions”.

The state of Michigan is allowing this to happen with the adjustments to the minimum wage law that passed on January 1, 2018. Lawmakers thought fewer jobs would be created for minors if the minimum wage for everyone was increased to $9.25 per hour (“Michigan Minimum Wage for 2017, 2018”). Therefore, the minimum wage should be the same no matter what age you are. It is clear that equal minimum wage is needed to improve equal pay and to decrease the discrimination of many young adults.
It may be 2018, but the gender pay gap is still here, why is that? Women have been and still are getting a lower pay than men to do the same job. Women are doing equal if not more work, but somehow make less. The following paragraphs will explain what is happening today like the fact that over time men 's pay increases more than women 's does. The Equality Act 2010 protects the people legally from workplace discrimination and discrimination in wider society.
