The Equal Rights Amendment has been an interesting issue over the number of years in the United States. It was an interesting amendment and an interesting aspect with regards to how women in the United States were affected; and how their response to this amendment was shown. Many women (and also some men) were in favour of this amendment and wished to further their ideology through various tactics such as protests, petitions and the likes. In saying this though, the majority of women and men who were typically part of the ‘American Dream’ (meaning that women were to stay home and be the housewife, while the men take care of all the problems in society and ‘bring home the bacon’) were very much against this amendment for numerous reasons. One aspect that people opposed the amendment was the legality of abortion. Women in the ERA movement were in favour of legalising abortion, whereas the majority of people were against the legalisation of abortion. Another point was that this had a ‘stain’ on the American value and dream that is, Women would now lose their rightful position as being a housewife in the home. They now had a vote and would be able to be heard amongst men in society. This made the majority of Americans very worried and were against this amendment. Another important aspect is that other women (in terms of race, or different class that is, working class) felt that this amendment would only benefit for a specific type of women. They felt that this amendment did not speak for all women in America, but only some. For example this would be beneficial for ‘White’ women that lived in a suburban-type of lifestyle that were usually a typical housewife. These are a few important aspects
