With every new adventure, there is always room to improve. I have hardly ever excelled in my writing. As I entered this class I was discouraged by the course title alone “University Writing”. As the class progressed I found I had more knowledge about writing than I thought. With the help from the instructor and also the helpful online tools: grammarly.com, paperatr.com, and smarthinking.com writing have become less of a burden and more of a true adventure. I learned why it is that we do not use a double negative. Punctuation, I rarely use it correctly but after this class, I have found confidence and know when to use a colon versus a semi-colon. That now I know that I am using punctuations correctly.

Either as a small child in school, the teacher would tell you to be quiet and to listen (Turaga, 2017 p. 48). The importance of being quiet and actively listening is o allow ourselves to focus on what is being said. If I was in briefing and my lieutenant was giving us instructions on how to escort an inmate from isolation and I was fidgeting in the back, then can almost bet that I did not really hear what the supervisor was saying. I may have gotten a small bit of it but I did not get all the nuggets that were being given to me. If I would have just directed my focus on the speaker I would have realized that the procedures had changed. Instead I just half listened and now I could be endangering someone else. Listening is a simple way to ensure that we all have the same knowledge and understanding, it is the most important thing we can do as humans. This allows us to communicate and advance conversations, also giving the speaker the assurance that they are not wasting their time and energy. Keep the distractions to a minimum (Turaga, 2017 p. 51). This allows a person to focus in and sustain listening (Turaga, 2017 p.55). Effective listening can save lives and enhance those around
