` 1 Unit 1 Reflection Journal The first couple of weeks of leadership have been introspective, but it has also been challenging. The activities haven’t been difficult. However, the conversations, readings, and topics have led me to reflect upon my own leadership style. In class, I answered a series of questions. The responses I gave would allow me to better understand my personality. I discovered that I was an introvert, intuitive, thoughtful, and judging. One of the characteristics of this personality is that the individual demands perfection and excellence from others. I also learned that I tended to be a type X leader. To be honest, I wouldn’t pick this movie to watch for fun. However, the film did portray the two types of leaders. When the movie begins it seems that Davenport was unable to lead his men, but this is exactly the style of an X leader. Davenport was afraid for his soldiers, and he felt like he had to protect them from themselves. He wouldn’t give the unit a chance to prove that they could succeed. Savage pushed the men, and he trusted them. When Savage needed them to succeed they did. Even though Savage demanded more from his men, he was a type Y leader. Another thing that stood out to me in the movie was the quest to find out what exactly “maximum effort” was. I believe that Savage himself finds the answer to this question when he is unable to pull himself into the airplane. Savage goes into a state shock until his unit returns. Savage was a successful leader because he gave his unit maximum effort, and they returned the
