Electric vehicles are becoming more of a reality every day. Even living in a small town in Mississippi, I have noticed a slow, but gradual increase in the number of electric vehicles present on the road. Many major car companies have decided to produce electric vehicle alternatives for consumers to purchase. There are several main reasons why people are deciding to go green. Electric vehicles have become more appealing because of their nonharmful effects on the environment, availability of new charging stations, and cost-efficient charging. Frangoul states in CNBC’s article, “One of the current challenges for EVs is ensuring there are enough charging stations for longer journeys to be completed,” (Frangoul). Frangoul describes how electric vehicles rely on electricity instead of being gas powered, creating the need to stop at local charging stations. Electric vehicles face the challenge of range, the problem being a full charge does not last as long as a tank of gas or diesel would. The driver will incur more frequent stops if driving an electric vehicle on a long journey. Some consumers might get agitated about the long wait while having to charge their cars. Austin and Lefevre state in the IEEE’s article, “Chicago, IL and Austin, TX are committed to create a network of charging stations, such that nobody will ever be more than five minutes from one,” (Austin and Lefevre). This evidence represents the major efforts that cities in the United States are putting forth to build new stations for convenience.
