Interview Person I interviewed: Sheriff Sean Smith of the Durango, Colorado Police Department When I interviewed Sheriff Sean Smith, I asked for advice for someone interested in going into Law Enforcement. His advice started with, admitting when you’re wrong. He said, just like a 12-step program, you should admit when you’re wrong, and not just to yourself, but to others around you. Along with this, you should find a solution for any problem that may arise. The next piece of advice he gave was, get involved with teamwork. When you get involved with teamwork, you can get feedback. Additionally, when you have the opportunity, make well-informed decisions. There may be a time, he said, when you may need to seek input outside your team to make a well-informed decision, as he stated before. Because of circumstances, it led him to work for the U.S. Department of Justice. He knew almost immediately it was not the right choice for his life, but decided to give it a shot and pursue it for a while. “There’s always a door or two and you pick which one you want to walk through. If you stay strong in who you are, persevere, and you continue to work on yourself, the path comes to you.” When picking a job, he says, find success that leads to finding a deeper purpose. When you find where you’re meant to be, you’ll have a feeling like you’re supposed to be there, and grow to love what you do.
