There have been several discussions about whether the drinking age should be lowered from 21 to 18. Many believe that lowering the drinking age will cause more harm than good, Others are urging this law to be revisited. Lowering the drinking age to 18 will not make things worse than the negative events that have already transpired due to underage drinking. It will help to make sense and keep consistency in our laws, create more responsible adults, and helps colleges better regulate alcohol consumption.
Its important that we stay consistent and that our laws make sense, Bradley Gitz in “Save Us From Youth” writes “For our laws to make sense they must be based on discernible political principles free of the kind of internal contradictions that consistency irons out.” If at the age of 18 a person is considered an adult, then they should be allowed to do adult things. This causes a rebellion, by actively holding something from someone because they are not qualified or in this case old enough for it does not make any sense when it come to the drinking age. Engs writes in “Why the drinking age should be lowered: An opinion based upon research.” “The irresponsible behavior is exhibited because a lake of knowledge of responsible drinking behavior, reactance motivation (rebellion against the law), or student sub-culture norms.” As an adult you are considered to be responsible, however the law says that you are an adult at 18 but just not a responsible adult because alcohol can’t be purchased until the age of 21. Allowing the age limit for drinking to stay 21 is creating irresponsible adults, adults of the age of 18 are seeing the age limit of 21 as a mystery or provocation, they are willing to break this law to be seen as equal or just as much capable of drinking as someone of the age
