Multicultural competence can be an ethical issue for a counselor when working with clients. It can be an ethical issue when individuals have different culture believes then others. A counselor can have ethical issues when working with a client that does not understand their culture believes. Counselors needs to be aware of their client culture believes before they start working with them. According to Bridge, Massie, and Mills “Social workers must be able to apply the principals of cultural competence to all levels of practice. They should become actively involved in influencing agencies, policies, and communities to respond to the diverse needs of diverse clients.” Therefore, when a counselor is working with a client with different believes they need to have an understanding of their culture.

Many families will think it is okay to punish their children because it is okay with their culture. If the counselor does not have an understanding of their culture she will not understand why are parents punishing their children.
Second example of the lack of cultural awareness can be in the Latino culture. If a counselor is not aware with this culture it can bring a lot of misunderstand during treatment. In the Latino culture some believe in cup coping. When a child is sick they put a cup with alcohol and fire in the child’s back to help with illness. If the counselor is not aware of the cultural awareness he or she will believe they are abusing the child.
Final example of the lack of cultural awareness can be stereotyping. Counselor may stereotype the culture believes from their clients. Stereotyping can occur when the counselor is being bias and is not aware of the cultural
