The New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) (2009), defines the United States – Mexico as a border region that is made up land being 62.5 miles north and south of international boundary, and stretches 2,000 miles from California to Texas. The border area consists of two sovereign nations (USA-MEXICO), 4 states on the USA side (Arizona, California, New Mexico, and Texas) and 6 in Mexico (Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas), 44 counties/ 80 municipalities, and 14 sister pair cities. There are approximately 12 million inhabitants living in the region and it is presumed that by the year 2025, the population will double the amount we have now. This region is known for being medically underserved and having a high number of uninsured and number of people who migrate, and a high rate of poverty (NMDOH, 2009). …show more content…

The role of the New Mexico OBH is to serve as a catalyst in ensuring that public health objectives and goals are met in the border region and that preventive and primary health care services are provided to the border community. The agency’s mission is to “improve the health status and health services in the New Mexico/Mexico Border Region and other border impact areas of the state” (NMDOH, 2009). There are currently 7 team members that make up the New Mexico OBH. The names and positions of the team members are OBH Health Director – Freida Adams, Community Development Coordinator- Angie Sanchez Corral, Administrator to the OBH – Priscilla, New Mexico Outreach Office Coordinator – Brenda Alvarado, Border Infectious Disease Surveillance Officer and Epidemiologist-Katharine Perez Lockett, Graphic Designer – Andre Walker, and Medicaid Eligibility Specialist – Lynette
