Against the Odds Puritan New England, life was religious, education and morale’s. Thinking of our world today and the world that dated back to 1670 it was quite different. Puritans lived longer, and were expected to teach religion to their children. As well as placing authority and discipline in the care of the father. Our lives our busy now with everyday tasks like working, cleaning, running errands. If we think about our tasks today, we will find that they were much different in the life of a Puritan child. Today our children are tasked with going to school and our not required by all parents to go to church. Depending on one’s religion or if a parent is not religious depends on either or not your child will have time for religious studies. “Puritans believed that a godly communication was constructed with well- ordered family’s” (Hollitz). Each child was to learn a trade or skill and “at the age of fourteen, a Puritan child would often be sent for as long as seven years to another family to learn a trade or skill” (Hollitz). We aspire our children today to become whatever our hearts desire, because if we work hard enough and push ourselves we truly can. In the life as a Puritan child, it seemed though they were not given much opportunity to be anything other than what their community seemed fit. Wondering outside the community to become something more did not seem ideal back then. Being sent off to another family is horrid and to think of my children being sent off for what could be seven years, is just terrifying to me. The amount of time spent away from my children, the numerous amounts of exciting moments in their life I could miss would just be
