Love. Rivalry. Death. Three significant words that change one’s perspective on looking at anything. Love is a key aspect in obtaining life’s full experience. Being able to share the most precious gift of memories and challenges with a person is many people’s interpretation of receiving the most value out of life. Rivalry between opinions and morals can affect the love between two people, but the rivalry does not have to be amongst each other, rivalry can arise from surrounding members as well. There are two types of poison used in the works, physical and metaphorical. In Romeo and Juliet the physical form of poison relates to the pain and suffering that the star crossed lovers had to go through in order to try and make their love a reality. Before Shakespeare have Romeo and Juliet take their lives through the poison, he has the Friar Laurence show Romeo a flower. Symbolically, a flower can indicate the foreshadowing of good or bad. It can be a positive agent or it can be a healing factor with the help of its aroma (2.2.23-31). The poison is an important symbol because it is able to depict the extent and importance of the love and fight for both of the two. It shows their strength and sacrifice; willingness to do anything to be together. Another type of poison is the metaphorical, symbolic poison of the two opposing families hatred and rivalry, which affect the love of the couple by contaminating it with toxic and negative thoughts.
