Should Parents be Responsible for Providing a Healthy Diet? Did you know that a baby’s food preferences develop as soon as 21 weeks in the womb? At this stage in life, a baby can distinguish complete flavors using their senses of taste and smell. In fact, whatever the mother chooses to eat will affect how the child responds to those flavors when eating solid foods. For example, if a mother chooses to eat a diet consisting of fruits and vegetables during pregnancy, it is shown that a child may prefer those foods as they grow older. Because of these facts,I believe a parent’s responsibility of providing a healthy diet for a child starts even before it is born. Evidence suggests that the food choices a mother makes during her pregnancy may impact for child's later acceptance of solid foods. Parents are typically held responsible for providing their growing children with the proper amount of sleep, safety, and education. This should also stand for providing proper nutrition. A young child isn’t going to know anything about the nutritional value of a food. I believe the parents should take the initiative to research and find information on what foods will benefit their child the most, rather than finding something convenient. These are the years when eating behaviors and patterns are developing. Children are learning what, when, and how much to eat based on the family’s different beliefs, attitudes, and practices surrounding food. Research has shown that having mealimes together as a family has had a big impact on how children eat as they get older and what food choices they make.
