The Great Gatsby (2013) Narrated by Nick Carraway (Toby Maguire or the original Spiderman to everyone else), the romantic screenplay runs for two hours. The viewer watches Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) shadow Daisy (Carey Mulligan) whom he’s stupidly in love with. He goes over and above trying to catch her attention with his annual bash, hoping that one day she would walk in. The film is played out in various settings, in Gatsby’s mansion within his private estate, in the city, hotel rooms, and the cemetery because somebody has to die in a good movie. This was a beautifully shot film with what seemed to be no shortage of attention to detail. The cast was exceptional and Leonardo portrayed a perfect vision of the Gatsby character. DiCaprio’s portrayal of Gatsby was solid and highly entertaining. His acting is flawless and spot on like in every other movie. Gatsby wasn’t in most of the opening scenes, that added to the suspense and when you first see him, you’re in admiration. In the movie, he’s obsessed with Daisy in a creepy way. All the characters were well represented and delivered a realistic time-period dialogue. Nick Carraway is very mesmerising. His narration and inner thoughts kept me watching, maybe because I recognised the voice from somewhere else. Tom Buchanan is a terrible human being married to Daisy, and she’s a materialistic, spoiled woman. It’s a lengthy movie, but the writers used every minute to tell the detailed love story, in a well-structured and intriguing way. I’m glad that the opening scenes were quick, I would’ve hated the drag. There was a steady pace and many moments that captivated the eye, and the storyteller in all of us.
