Causes The causes of Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes differ but both deal with an issue with insulin that effects a persons blood glucose level. "Experts believe there are two factors related to both Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes that must be considered. First, there could be a natural predisposition to diabetes. Second, something in the environment must be involved in directly triggering the disease. Though genes alone are not enough to cause diabetes, they do play a major role" (Ali, 2011, p. 39). Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes cannot be caused by genes alone; therefore, an environmental factor has to play a part in causing the disease. Environmental triggers could include illnesses, stress, or obesity. To treat it, you take insulin, test your blood sugars and carefully watch what you eat. Self-management is the key to good control. Type 2 is far more widespread, and spreading fast along with America's waistline. It's caused by eating too much and exercising too little. To treat it, you eat less and exercise more. Type 1 Diabetes is commonly more severe and unexpected than Type 2. One’s body stops producing insulin therefore insulin supplements become a major part of their daily lives.
