It has always been an American tradition for a father and his son to toss the old pigskin around for a gratifying heart to heart connection. Some of those sons take on football as their sport of choice through their twelve years of school. After their senior year of high school, those who found a deep connection with the sport, tackle playing on a college team. College is a time in a person’s life where they devote a great deal of their time studying for the next exam. During this time period, some students choose to invest the rest of their time in extracurricular activities, one of which is sports. Students who specialize in another area will begin to take note on how they are not being paid as well: “Students who excel in other fields, such as music, may be paid for using their skills” (“Compensation” 1). In order to even the playing field and prevent protests, the college would have to compensate other talented individuals. This could include band members who play for the football team, cheerleaders, and actors in plays. Women sports would also have to be compensated to ensure no gender discrimination violations: “...Schools might have to pay female athletes in addition to males, even though no women’s sports are profitable” (“Compensation” 2). Paying the female sports athletes will only further the debt colleges will obtain. Especially being that women’s sports do not support the school financially. Another point of interest would be that if colleges were to compensate athletes, students would no longer have a student to student connection with the players (“Should College Football” 2). Once athletes begin to earn compensation, the student body will dwindle on their school spirit. Non-athletic students will lose spirit due to the lack of balance.
