Reflective Essay: Why Leaders Do Not Command Excellence

Leaders do not command excellence; they build excellence. Excellence is “being all you can be” within the bounds of doing what is right for your organization. To reach excellence you must first be a leader of good character. You must do everything you are supposed to do.
As I was though in the military leaders are made not borne. From an early age I learned that in order to be a leader you had to learn how to follow. At the age of 5 I was put into military school to develop those traits but I failed to notice that those traits were right at home with my dad. My father was an exceptional man that showed those traits on a daily basis. Compassioned, fair, and honesty, a man that who treated everyone the same no matter where you came from or who you were. He was and will always be a leader I will always look up to. With years and working with a lot of soldiers from different walks of life there is one person that was a great leader and that I’m proud to say I worked with her. What is discussed a lot less is that different people want to be treated differently. Some people need more praise and recognition; others want to produce results by working as a high performing team; still others tackle their daily job by getting stuff done and crossing stuff off their list. If that does not complicate things enough for leaders, some people want you to tell them exactly what you want them to do, and then just leave them alone. Figuring people out, and treating them like they want to be treated, will be a big part of a leader’s success.
Leadership takes practice. Leadership isn’t something you practice once and become a master at. Overall, leaders are larger than life in many ways. Personal traits play a major role in determining who will and who will not be comfortable leading others. However, it's important to remember that people are forever learning and
