Essential Calculus, Early Transcendentals, Second Edition by James Stewart, Belmont: California, 2013. 833 pages. Reviewed by Eric Sherlock. This will be my first review of a textbook that I used extensively throughout school. I have completed all necessary calculus classes I was required to take each of which used this book. Essential Calculus, Early Transcendentals, Second Edition by James Stewart is a textbook aimed at teaching completely the subject of calculus. Having used this book from calculus I up to calculus III I was able to spend ample time reading and working through the book very thoroughly. Being a textbook this text is incredibly informative and complete in its teachings and examples. Essential Calculus does an incredible job introducing and explaining new mathematical concepts. When introducing new concepts the James Stewart effectively presents the material and illustrates how to apply it with a few simple step-by-step examples. After the presentation of the material, increasingly difficult walk-through examples are given. I found the more difficult step-by-step examples to be the most beneficial aspect of this entire book because not every little step is shown. By this I mean the author leaves many smaller steps out of the examples which allow the reader to continuously connect the steps on their own. I thought this was unbelievably advantageous because not only did it aid in the understanding of the material, I found this also grew my own confidence in my calculus skills because I was able to associate all the particular rules and ideas with different types of problems and
