Gloria Conyers Hewitt was born October 26th, 1935, in Sumter, South Carolina as the youngest and only daughter. Her parents, Emmett, and Crenella Conyers, were both college graduates who had low paying jobs. Her father was a printer and her mother was an elementary school teacher. Gloria attended Moore elementary school where she recalls receiving a spanking from her teacher for not doing her arithmetic homework. Gloria said in an interview, she never forgot to do her math homework again. Gloria also attended Mather Academy, a coed boarding high school. She expressed to her friends and others that she wanted to become a nurse practitioner. Hewitt realized that she could use solutions for math problems as barter for bullies at her school to leave her alone. She always liked math but early on slacked on doing homework. She was bored, and found it easy to receive an ‘A’ for a math assignment. Gloria was moved to the ‘B’ section of her classes the next semester. Lee Lorch, the mathematics department chairmen, motivated Hewitt to enroll in calculus and she did. Over winter break of her Sophomore year, Gloria was hooked on math. She took her calculus book home with her and practiced working on problems everyday. Gloria got married and started a family of her own. With the help of her family, taking care of her child, Hewitt graduated from Fisk University, with a bachelor of arts degree in Mathematics. Thanks to Lee Lorch, she was offered a teaching assistantship to attend graduate school in mathematics at the University of Washington at Seattle. Gloria obtained her master of science degree in mathematics, and accepted a position as an assistant professor of mathematics at the university of Montana. From 1964-1972 Gloria Conyers Hewitt became a visiting lecturer for the Mathematical Association of
