Gloria Steinem’s experiences in life have enabled her to become an important figure in the feminist movement. Her legacy as a strong, independent woman will live on for generations to come.
Gloria Steinem had a normal, somewhat hectic upbringing. Gloria was born on March 25, 1934, in Toledo, Ohio. Her father, Leo, was in itinerant antique dealer who moved frequently (Pogrebin, 2009). She discussed the campaign of Eugene McCarthy in a unique way that was new to her time (Lazo, 1998). Gloria used her column “The City Politic” in the “New York” magazine to explain her viewpoints (Lazo, 1998). She had an amazing talent for writing and understanding perspectives that were not easily explained. Steinem continues to write about many topics, including feminism and politics, which she excelled in.
Gloria aspired to become a well known journalist. Steinem’s friend, Clay Felker, wanted her to help start a new magazine, called “New York” (Lazo, 1998). This gained some attention from important people around the world, including critics and readers (Lazo, 1998). She believed there was more out there and that she was capable of so much more than what she was doing. Steinem soon became famous for her unique perspectives as a feminist and her special way of writing them.
