My salient career goal is to become a successful independent computer engineer, as women are a minority in the engineering field. In order to achieve that goal I have kept smaller goals that will build up. These are to graduate with a 4.0 GPA from the University of Houston and to gain as much experience and skills during this journey. I feel confident enough to say that as long as I remain dedicated I will definitely reach my goals.
I will be writing about the goal I’m focusing on now, that is to graduate with a 4.0 GPA and how I plan on making the best out of this experience. Being an international student from Suriname, and coming to study at the University of Houston is life changing. A vast transition for myself was going from Dutch, which is my first language, to English. I grew up in a third world country that has been facing numerous difficulties such as lack of or inadequate medical amenities, security issues/robberies, corruption, poverty, and high food and fuel prices. The schools in Suriname are also in an immensely poor condition, as they don’t have air conditioners in the classrooms. Also, when it rains a bit too heavy, the classrooms tend to come under water. I have worked two jobs during high school with my title as an administrative intern. Currently, I am working for the company “I AM GOLD” in Suriname, which is related to my major. This company is teaching me programming and has given me the possibility to assist the help desk support team. Furthermore, I got the opportunity to interact with the employees and ask them for advice. By working here I am not only demonstrating my skills, but I am also finding my weaknesses.
