Shirley Ann Jackson is a theoretical physicist and famous African American inventor that has made many amazing achievements in science. As a child she began to develop a large understanding of science and math. This led to her constructing studies and experiments. For example, she would study the flight and eating patterns of honey bees. As her fascination for science and math grew so did her ambition. She followed this ambition and went on to study at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. There she obtained her bachelor and doctoral degrees in physics. Achieving this goal, she broke barriers and became the first African American woman to earn a Ph.D. in Theoretical Elementary Particle Physics. She is the first African-American woman to receive a doctorate from MIT in any field. Jackson worked on many experiments with theoretical physics and used her knowledge while working at Bell Laboratories to advance the telephone and its advanced workings. Dr. Jackson’s research and experiments made it possible for people around the world to create inventions such as the portable fax, touch tone telephone, solar cells, fiber optic cables, and the complex technology of caller ID and call waiting. Now Dr. Jackson resides as the president of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, which is one of the oldest technology and research universities in the United
