Marijuana Legalization: An Ethical Issue One of the current issues that generates great controversy is the legalization of cannabis, or better known as marijuana. The uses of this plant have been discussed by the effects it produces, in terms of health and their reactions in the body, and the social impact that it can have if it is legalized across the country. Although there is not enough research about marijuana and its negative effects, many people state that medical marijuana has properties that are having a positive effect on those who are suffering from painful illnesses (many epileptic attacks are being controlled by using marijuana). If people focused their attention on this particular outcome of medical marijuana, they might have a positive opinion about its legalization. What people need is to be informed before having a saying about the legalization process. Legalizing marijuana will also contribute to the economy, which will have a positive effect on society. Prisons will not be overcrowded because the possession of an ounce of marijuana will be legal and many people will not suffer from having a criminal record if caught with this amount of marijuana. My recommendation to fellow citizens, mostly parents, is that they are the ones responsible to provide a good harmonious environment at home, and the best education possible. But do not forget that education starts at home. Government should also emphasize prevention over incarceration and other educational and community programs to prevent teenagers from using marijuana. Businesses should comply with all the regulations required by the agencies.
