1984: An Anthropological Pentadic Analysis The ideological system within 1984 begins with the sole reliance of Big Brother, and His teachings such as “War is Peace”, “Freedom is Slavery”, and “Ignorance is Strength”. The worth of an individual in this novel, more specifically, in Oceania, pertains to their loyalty to Big Brother. Throughout the novel, the religion in Oceania seems to be Big Brother, as He is the one who sets up the beliefs of the people and the system of moral relationships and the one that is worshipped.
Using the name big brother could bring a positive connotation. By making them feel comfortable it could counter the fear from the telescreens and thought police once again psychologically manipulating the
Big Brother’s main focus is to maintain power of the citizens. Big Brother is so power hungry that he uses the Thought Police, citizens who can “read their minds” and know if other citizens are thinking of rebelling, to control the citizens. Telescreens, a television with a camera in it, are set up throughout the town and in the homes of the citizens. This way, Big Brother has total control over their lives. Sometimes, Big Brother hides telescreens in the house to spy on people more.

The Junior Spies and Thought Police is a perfect example because no one knows who was and who was not a member of those institutions. Big Brother does exist as the embodiment of the Party, but he can never die. Big Brother is aptly named for his position in Oceania — a name of trust, protection, and affection — another example of doublethink. Big Brother, or, the Party, is as unlike a benevolent big brother as Hitler or Stalin (cliffnotes.com). In conclusion, it is crucial that people are very careful about who they talk too, and what they do around things they are unsure of, because just when they thought someone was a friend, they could potentially be a Thought Police, or just when they thought the sign on the wall was Big Brother, it was actually watching every move they
In “1984”, Oceania has told their citizens that they’re at war with Eurasia as their ally and Eastasia as their enemy. However, towards the end of the book, Winston tells his lover Julia that he remembers a time when Eurasia was the enemy, but the Party had rewritten it to make it Eastasia instead. Every citizen of Oceania is unaware of the change the Party makes on the war because they change every piece of information to make it look like they’ve been at war with Eastasia instead of what their information said before. All of this also shows the reader how the Party is able to change
In the book, 1948, the Party is the reigning power over Oceania with the Big Brother as the head of state in a totalitarian manner. Big Brother’s political system recognizes no limits to his authority and controls every aspect of public and private life of the Party members, with, “BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU,” (2) as a recurring Party slogan that emphasizes the lack of privacy in the Party. Every aspect of privacy is removed through hidden cameras, telescreens and secret agents of the Though Police prowling around. The reason for the lack of privacy is to prevent thoughtcrime which is a taboo for Party members. Thoughtcrime is anything that creates individuality, like feelings, as it could cause problems to the Party.
Covering up events 1984: Shifted the history of war enemy of Oceania from Eurasia to Eastasia to make it seem like they had been fighting Eurasia all along. False Representation of world events. 1984: The ministry of truth was changing history in the view of its citizens so that it said that Oceania was the creator or generator of many inventions and
1984 Essay There’s no point in trying to fight the government; it will always have control over us, no matter how hard we try to fight it. Americans are like the members of Oceania in Orwell’s 1984 today due to the use of photo and media manipulation by the government in order to rewrite the past. Some people may believe that the government does not have complete control because the public voices their anti-government opinions through protesting, but little actually comes out of these protests. Manipulation by the government has been proven time after time in America, and Orwell predicted that.
1984 follows a man named Winston Smith who resides in Oceania, a country ran by a totalitarian government called INGSOC. The government controls almost every aspect of peoples’ lives and going against the government results in elimination or torture. Surprisingly, 1984 relates significantly to several of today’s societies and governments, including the United States, Russia, Cuba, and North Korea in ways of mass mind control, electronic intrusion, and endless war. The USA PATRIOT Act allows the government to get a hold of an individual’s private records without a warrant.
Big Brother has an extensive dominating power. The doublethink phrase he uses demands love and submission at the same time. “Members of the society are expected to love Big Brother not only to follow the rules , but also to have a faith instilled in them for the leader of the corrupt system’’ (Mazur,2011). The warmth of name Big Brother gives people confidence and support, on the other side it’s an open threat for those who confront and disobey him. For the Party members he’s an inspiration, hope, while for the proles it remains simply a public figure.
Big Brother is watching you. He sees everything you see. He knows everything you think. His eyes follow you as you walk to and from work. His thought police will take care of you if something seems off.

Readers can witness the cruelties that happens in oceania upon winston perspective, he was the only one who decided to write in a diary the situations citizens were going through with the government. Oceania is ruled over a totalitarian government which
In the book 1984 by George Orwell (1949) , the government uses physical and mental methods to control the citizens of Oceania. All the people in Oceania have no freedom at all. The government have physical and mental methods of controlling the population.
