During this podcast, Dr. Reginald York explains evidence based practice (EBP) and practice based evidence (PBE). In addition to, comparing the differences and similarities in the two different perspectives used by practitioners in psychotherapy in trying to determine the best way to use evidence in practice. Dr. York explained how practitioners using EBP will carefully consider the evidence derived from systematic research and determine the best treatment based on the client’s condition or disorder. Whereas, PBE evaluates treatment options on an individual basis using client feedback. Step two is where the two perspectives differ. Each type of practitioner will review the available evidence, although an EBP provider will be looking for the treatment which seems more effective in the treatment of the client’s condition, whereas the PBE practitioner will base their treatment approach on the individual being treated. During step three, the EBP therapist will sort through the evidence, while trying not to be constrained to use the treatment with the most amount of evidence. At this stage the PBE provider will implement the treatment chosen collaboratively with the client, while continually measuring progress using some type of systematic client feedback. The EBP practitioner will go on to determine how the evidence should be used based on client preference and practitioner expertise. Alternatively, the PBE clinician will decide what steps to take next based on client feedback. There might be a change treatment, or the client may be referred someone at a different or higher level of expertise. Finally, clinicians using either viewpoint will again collaborate with their clients on the treatment
