Benjamin Franklin, the author of The Autobiography and Sandra Cisneros, the author of Straw Into Gold: The Metamorphosis of the Everyday both define success and how they achieved it, in their piece of writing. Though they both may seem to have similar views on success, they infact differ greatly. Franklin believes that in order to reach success, one must alter himself through the use of a method, while Cisneros believes that rather than changing himself, one can use his imagination and the small things in life to be successful. Furthermore, Franklin describes achieving success at the moment he starts working towards the goal, whereas Cisneros describes achieving success once she has completed her goals.

Celeste Headlee argues that due to the increasing use of ‘within reach’ technology, we’re losing our ability to converse face-to-face and that opens a brand new door for modern conversation. A conversation requires a balance between talking and listening, which somewhere along the way we lost balance. We tend to use conversation as a platform to focus more on our own thoughts and feelings rather than it being a place for discussion and understanding. Sometimes, while someone is telling us about their faults and failures, we tend to stop listening and revert back to OUR faults and failures.

For children and young people to develop positive relationships it is crucial for adults to model effective communication in the classroom. As a teacher or teaching assistant, you have the platform to facilitate social learning and lead by example. The characters in this story that have not completely lost their sense of verbal communication and comprehension of it seem to be much more relaxed and confident, whereas those who seem to have lost it turn to violence to solve their problems and are extremely on edge and nervous. For instance, while the two men are fighting on the bus we never really find out what began the altercation which very possibly was just a simple misunderstanding, but because they aren't able to communicate fully it results in violence. This same miscommunication can occur in a modern society even where this plague doesn't exist and does so on a daily basis because people will argue over social media or in other ways that arent face to face contact and instantly go to some form of violence rather than talking it out. To recap, through several altercations that occured in this story we learn how miscommunication can lead to

There is a lot of stimuli out there, in the world. Our minds, however, are quite limited in their ability to parse every single input present in our environment. This limitation is not necessarily a bad thing, it is perhaps what makes human communication possible. In their Truthfulness and Relevance paper, Wilson & Sperber attempt to theorize how our minds process meaning, both drawing on and rejecting certain fundamental aspects of Grice’s account. For Wilson and Sperber, as well as Grice, communication is about being informed.
