Consumerism in America is a big problem. Big name companies use the means of consumerism to manipulate children and our youth into being interested in their products and services. Hey, that’s just good business right? Ben Roethlisberger ate his Wheaties today. Attractive people eat our burgers. Luke Skywalker Eats our macaroni and cheese! While not verbatim, these things sound eerily familiar, correct? The future of our country is being coaxed and manipulated to spend their money on things that are not responsible and sometimes the products are even bad to the consumer’s health. It is all too common for someone to see their favorite athlete in a fast food commercial, advertising a fundraiser, supporting a charity, or even on a box of cereal. Clearly, most of these things are not negative, but still manipulative. A child sees their favorite superhero or athlete and all they see is a role model and they want to be just like them. That's massive and it appeals to Ronald McDonald and his entire crew. Ronald's crew consists of the Hamburglar, Sundae, Grimace, Mayor McCheese, Officer Big Mac, Birdie the Early Bird, and of course Ronald McDonald himself. This is obviously an ad campaign targeted at children and parents. Kids like clowns right? Even adults are targeted. Sex sells, and big companies know that and take advantage of it. How many commercials have you seen where a very attractive person is eating a cheeseburger on top of a brand new car in a very seductive manner? Even in the past many advertisements depicted an attractive person smoking their favorite cigarette. This form of advertisement unfortunately falls on the negative side of consumerism because this leads consumers to make unhealthy dietary choices, and promotes irresponsible money management. “Aside from the salad greens and tomatoes, most fast food is delivered to the restaurant already frozen, canned and dehydrated, or freeze dried.
