Ray Bradbury’s dystopian novel Fahrenheit 451 he reveals a future where books are banned and if found in the possession of anyone they would be punished. The government makes the people ignorant about the world and themselves. People in this society don’t think. They’re just supposed to think they are important and be happy all the time. They don’t realize that as an individual, they have so much potential. They have the capability to stand up for themselves and others. If they speak up many others will change the way they think and feel. In the novel, Montag starts to get curious about books because Clarisse has sparked his curiosity. He wants to know more about these books that he has collected and he wants someone to elaborate and teach him about the books and their meaning, but Clarisse is dead and he can’t think about anyone else. Suddenly, he remembers a man named Faber. He was the first person that had spoken about a book to him. He remembers their first interaction, “Yes, of course. Again he found himself thinking of the green park a year ago. The thought had been with him many times recently…when [Faber] finally lost fear of Montag, he had talked in cadenced voice, looking at the sky and the trees and the green park, and when an hour had passed he said something to Montag and Montag had sensed it was a rhymeless poem. Then the old man grew even more courageous and said something else and that was a poem, too” (pages 70-71). Montag is forever touched by this moment for it is the moment he first encountered with a book and he feels something towards the words written in them. Bradbury uses word choice such as “finally lost fear” and “looking at the sky” to express a calm tone that suggests that Montag wasn’t initially thinking of turning him in, instead, he stays there for an hour and how he felt impacted how this man had the courage to say a poem.
