Semester Exam Essay In the play Romeo and Juliet there were many characters with archetypes but Friar Laurence who represents the mentor, is one that stands out more than others. Friar is a mentor because he guides and watches over Romeo and Juliet throughout the entire play. In act two scene six, Friar Laurence marries Romeo and Juliet after they met up at the ball. The Friar is skeptical at first and gives Romeo his opinion and guidance telling. He tells Romeo that he is moving quite fast because just a few days ago he was complaining about how much he loved Rosalind. Friar Laurence says in exact quotes “Holy Saint Francis, what a change is here! Is Rosalind, whom thou didst love so dear. So soon forsaken? Young men’s love then lies not truly in their hearts, but in their lies”. In this scene Mercutio is killed by Tybalt, which causes Romeo to kill Tybalt to avenge his death. The Prince discovers this and banishes Romeo to Mantua. Romeo later goes to Friar Laurence for advice and he tells Romeo to say his goodbyes to Juliet and leave by the next morning, then once things settle down Friar Laurence could to work things out and try to get Romeo to return.
