John Wayne Gacy Jr. was born on March 17, 1942, to middle-class Marion and John Gacy Senior in Chicago, Illinois. His mother was Danish and his father was Polish. His father was an abusive alcoholic with a violent temper that often led to him beating his wife and children, the beatings were usually with a razor strap. John’s beatings were usually so brutal that he ended up in the hospital most of the time and was suffering from blackouts caused by seizures. Since John’s medical condition was never diagnosed Sr. often accused Gacy of fabricating illnesses even while lying helpless on a hospital bed.

John Wayne Gacy was one of the most vicious serial killers to exist in the United States history. He was known as the clown who killed. He was convicted of 33 murders in total, all of his victims were male and most of them consisted of teenage boys. Gacy was first convicted of sexual assault in 1968, and he had later went on to kill 33 young males. Twenty-Nine of those bodies were buried underneath his property in the Chicago Suburbs and four were found in a nearby river.
To many, Pogo the Clown was a lovable character who would entertain the community. We can all come to an agreement that serial killers are both horrendous and unpredictable human beings. Most acts of violence we hear about are committed by serial killers. Unsatisfied with their previous actions, serials killers look to execute more victims. In most cases, the upbringing of the individual plays a huge role on the killer. Because of their twisted techniques and motives, some of these killers are infamously known to be the most frightening criminals in history.

Gacy was a pedophile, and prayed on young males very much like the animalistic monster he was, taking over thirty people’s lives over a time span of only 3 brief years. John was not only a serial killer, but an enraged, infamous clown who still, to this day, lingers in the nightmares of citizens all throughout Illinois and Iowa, where is ruthless wrath was unveiled right before everyone's, including his own, very eyes. Harrison is the son of Hazel and George in the Icarus tale; Harrison Bergeron. They live in a Dystopian Society where handicaps are forced on them against their will in attempt to limit their abilities, resulting in what their government believes is deserved equality. Harrison then rebels against the government, and gets shot as his punishment. The message we are fed from this Icarus tale is that if we handicap people, or attempt to diminish diversity, then it’s impossible to have a successful society. The first reason why diminishing diversity would result in an unsuccessful society is because people wouldn’t be able to express who they are, resulting in citizens rebelling against higher power.
Lets look at my background through the lens of Heinz Kohut. Here is what Cooper and Randall say in their book on Kohut, “For Kohut, a healthy self is an enthusiastic self on its way to fulfilling its transformed form of grandiosity.” He would say I have a pour assembly of object relations. An internal object is a piece of mental structure that is formed from a person’s experiences with important caregivers in life.
Media are platforms of mass communication that can be categorized as either new of traditional media, with new media being forms of communication that make use of technologies such as the Internet, and traditional media being more conventional forms of media such as newspapers. Media, primarily new media, is getting more popular and influential, especially in today’s day and age since we are exposed to it a lot more than in the past and also since media is more easily accessible now. The media can shape our behaviours, perceptions and opinions, and it is important to know how people are influenced and impacted by it. The media can influence someone’s perception of social reality, or perceptions of beauty or even influence people’s behaviours and habits and therefore, the media does shape who we are. One way that the media can shape who we are is by influencing our perception of social reality.
