Start or edit my journal entry Many first nations groups first meetings with european explorers were friendly. Both groups were interested in trade, and with predominating attitudes of fairness and hopeful of creating healthy relationships. For the Beothuk, it was different. They had no common goal with the settlers, so they avoided each other. Neither group was interested in helping the other. When the explorers blocked the Beothuk's access to the sea and consequently their main source of food, the Beothuk moved inland. Unfortunately, the problems didn't end there. Once the fur trade began, the Beothuk were pushed even farther inland. The fur trade grew and it became increasingly difficult for the Beothuk to compete for food and furs. With
