Mail Mishap In the story Romeo and Juliet, Friar John failed to deliver a letter about Friar Lawrence’s plan a simple mistake lead to grave consequences, the tragic death of Romeo and Juliet. However, it was Romeo’s choice to get poison to kill himself to be with Juliet which pushed Juliet to kill herself when she found out that he was dead. Romeo was ultimately responsible for his own death and that of Juliet’s. He was the one who asked for, ”A dram of poison, such soon-speeding gear as will disperse itself through all the veins” (Rom.5.1.60-61). If he didn’t rush to buy the poison of his own will and take it to die next to the sleeping Juliet, he would have gotten the letter eventually. However, Romeo wouldn’t have bought the poison and tried to kill himself if he had received the letter that Friar John was supposed to deliver. Friar John should have delivered the letter, but he could not because, “Finding him, the searchers of the town, Suspecting that we both were in a house where the infectious pestilence did reign, Sealed up the doors and would not let us forth”(Fri John.5.2.8-11). If Friar John had focused on delivering that letter instead of waiting for his friend who was stuck in quarantine, he could have gotten the job done with ease. That letter was of great importance and if he had just went without delay straight to Romeo instead of stopping to wait for his friend he would have gotten the letter to Romeo in time and Romeo and Juliet would have not died. Therefore the deaths of Romeo and Juliet is Friar John’s fault. Romeo would have never gotten the idea to kill himself if he had just received the letter from Friar John in time, he would have known Friar Lawrence’s plan that his love is not truly dead and they could have lived happily ever after.
