Police organizations have been evolving over the years, but still there are so many things that have to be address in order to create a better law enforcement institutions. Police misconduct and police brutality have been the center of many confrontations between police officer and society. It is imperative that police organizations change the police subculture that exist among them that protects any wrongdoing from being disclose in order to promote a more efficient service to society. In the process of doing this assignment I learned how cohesive is the relationship between officers that most of the times protect them when they are acting in a misbehave way. It is really impressive to see how one officer was seen as a traitor in the organization because he decided to report police brutality.
Police corruption is not something that is frequently talked about, and there are definitely very few films about the subject. One such film is Serpico, which is based off of the life of NYPD Officer Frank Serpico. The movie shows the issues of police corruption, and how the police subculture works to keep it covered. The police subculture is a very complicated and closed thing.
The charts above show the disparity in sentencing between the general public and law enforcement. Despite officers being convicted on charges sometimes more severe than the general public, for instance a police officer killing on duty and a non violent offender being charged with selling drugs, officers spent 29% less time in jail on average then the people in which they have sworn to protect and serve (Packman, 2011). This disparity rises when only cases of excessive force are viewed. Of the 2,716 officers who had allegations brought upon them for the use of excessive force, a mere 17 were ever charged with a crime and only 77 being convicted.
For example, instead of bringing the money used in an illegal transaction to the station, two federal agents stole $1000 from a drug lord they arrested. Another example is a police officer uses the information he gained to offer a protection for criminals in exchange for money. Police brutality is a misconduct where a police officer takes advantage of his authority and position to use excessive force while performing his duties. A police officer beats up a civilian under arrest who wasn't posing any threat to the police officer or to other civilians. Another example of police brutality is when a police officer threatens to hurt the suspect or his loved ones in exchange for
The book explores police corruption in relation to gender. Marilyn Corsianos has tried to expand the reader’s knowledge and help them get a better view on how corruption and policing and their relationship to gender. She brings out to light many aspects of corruption that are not regarded as corruption but considering their nature they qualify to be referred to as corruption. Acts such as racial profiling, gender prejudice, and selective law enforcement are some of the corrupt acts that have been overlooked by the society. According to the book, police tend to defend injustices in the community other than fight them.
The main example throughout the documentary was the “rotten pocket” example that is used to describe a corruption in the prescient where more than one officer is corrupt, and are cooperating to fulfill this illegal act. In the documentary, Michaels partner described how everyone, even up to the captain was corrupt and in on their ring. This is a big problem within police departments since other officers will lie to protect their own, instead of doing what is in the best interest of the station, and the criminal justice system. Many programs like the early intervention systems and the mixed approach to police accountability The main goal of these programs being implemented, is to protect the agency from double-crossing officers and protect the
Finally, I would like to look at a podcast called Serial. The first season of Serial follows the murder of a high school senior Hae Min Lee in 1999. After searching for six weeks, her body is found buried in the local park. Her ex-boyfriend, Adnan, is arrested and charged with her murder. However, Sarah Koenig, host of Serial, believes there is something fishy about the case from the start.
Police corruption is a hot topic displayed everyday through media and everyday life. Conversely, police is not as corrupt as what is presented through media today. But definitely there are always rotten apples, rotten barrels and even rotten orchards in police that ruin it for everyone else. Canadian policing mostly seems to have rotten apples rather than the barrels or orchards idea. This topic of police corruption became a hot topic specify in the U.S due to the LAPD Rampart scandal, as all three of these ideas of the rotten apples, rotten barrels and even rotten orchards were present.
Police Brutality In The USA The first police department in the United States was established in Boston in 1838; although this happened almost 200 years ago, the police force today is still imperfect and, some would say, corrupted. Law enforcements have been protecting citizens since the beginning of our nation, and this force is needed for us to live in safety, but that does not necessarily mean that they are doing a good job. A lot of people of color are often discriminated against by police officers and are frequently verbally or physically abused. This is often known as police brutality which is an act of misconduct done by a member law enforcement through the use of an extreme amount of force to physically, mentally, or emotionally attack
Nurse Ratched views McMurphy as a clog in her machine. A rattle that could collapse her entire machine that she defines her life 's work. She views him as a lowlife, that has entered the ward to rob the inmates of their money. She is not amused, nor accepting of McMurphy as a human and tries to derail him any chance she can get. McMurphy and Chief see that while Nurse Ratched is the root of the inmates fear, it is them that have lost the will and the drive to live.
Police Corruption Against Minorities Today, law enforcement is against minority groups due to the fact that they get treated worse or just get pulled over for not being white. Since the whites are the dominant group in the United States, they control the laws and criminal justice system. It’s up to us, the minority groups to stand up and say something. Jailing minorities for very minor offenses can cause lots of problems to their family. For example, a parent is jailed for a small possession of illegal drugs, and that parent is the one who is working to pay the bills, the family will certainly struggle to meet their monthly needs.
Corruption of Power “Being president doesn’t change who you are. It reveals who you are,” (Obama Michelle). Definition of corrupt, dishonest or illegal behavior, specifically by powerful people, such as government officials or police officers (Merriam-Webster). Many leaders are corrupt, but that doesn’t mean that power caused their corruption. They were probably like that before.
Police Brutality The use of excessive force by the police is nothing new, and with so many cases out there, it is clear that "to serve and protect" does not exactly apply to all of law enforcement as it should. Even though in some cases the use of harsh force has resulted into solving big crimes, officers have used the excessive force for personal reasons like race. It has affected many lives in a different way and question the authority officers have.. Police Brutality is an ongoing problem and existent concern in the United States; the unjustified shootings, fatal choking, and rough treatment have contributed to the present problem of police brutality.
For centuries, Shakespeare’s compositions have fascinated audiences and academics alike. King Lear, one of Shakespeare’s most established tragedies, details King Lear’s catastrophic downfall from the throne of Britain. Based on an earlier work by Geoffrey of Monmouth, Shakespeare adapts “Leir of Britain” from Historia Regum Britanniae as the groundwork for King Lear. Although Shakespeare’s theatrical production remains undoubtedly comparable to its source, significant differences between the two works result in distinct outcomes. Shakespeare, in comparison to Monmouth, opts to develop Lear to a greater extent.
Police officers should take integrity rests from time to time; this would test if the officer will make honest choices when faced by a situation. This tests would lead to opening of investigations and uprooting corrupt and dishonest officers. Internal affairs model- this would help reduce corruption by investigating the officers from the department and resolve it internally from the
