“The original term ‘American Dream’ was coined during the Great Depression by James Truslow Adams, who wrote that the American dream ‘is that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability and achievement, regardless of social class or circumstances of birth’ ” (573). He then addresses the views of liberal economists and activists, who think the American dream is dead, using facts from a survey done in 2009 by the New York Times. Essentially, the “survey found that 72 percent of Americans still believed it was possible to start poor, work hard, and become rich in America” (573).
The American dream is more alive than it ever has been. A recently published essay “The American Dream: Dead, Alive, or on Hold?” written by Indiana University law student Brandon King, exposes readers to a few different approaches to fixing the United States economy. King begins his essay by discussing how within recent years the American population has been exposed to the national debt crisis, stock plummets, high unemployment and surviving through this Great Recession. Despite the American Dream in the novel Great Gatsby may look similar to today’s, today’s dream is significantly different in various ways.
The American Dream is a dream that all mankind has. A lot of the common people place confidence in the fact that poverty is one of the biggest factors holding people back from that dream. People who agree that poverty is detrimental and will not let people achieve the American Dream find ways to help them be able to experience it. Statistically, the American Dream is perishing due to the rise of income inequality and the slowing of economic growth. Income inequality is a dominant problem in the United States. The top 1% of the United States occupies 20% of all the country's income, while the bottom 50% only obtains 12%. Since 1980, the average annual income of the top 1% has substantially increased from $344,000 to over one million dollars.

The American Dream once gave people hope for a good life in America. Americans once pictured living in this great country with a spouse, kids, a nice house, financial stability, a healthy family, good education, and a happy life. While some people can still achieve the American Dream, whether it is by luck or hard work, many Americans have lost hope of the American Dream. Money is a huge factor in why the American Dream is so much harder to achieve today. America has hit an all time low with lack of financial stability, an expensive higher education system, and a bad health care system stripping away citizens money.
Inequality and the American Dream The main claim of this article is about inequality. America’s economy is growing larger but not benefiting the poor and middle class as it is the wealthy. While the rich are getting richer, the middle class are only slightly benefiting while the poor are in a stagnant state.
Poverty in the United States The United States of America is the wealthiest county in the world, and who would of thought that America had poverty and wage gap issues. Having lived in a third world country, I was shocked by how much it is concealed. Rich Hill is a documentary about three different families financially struggling day in and day out in rural towns. The documentary tells the story of Andrew, Harley, and Appachy wrestling through obstacles and dealing with life. Andrew was one of the characters that stood out to me because he was the most “normal” and had realistic expectation on what you need to become somewhat financially stable.
As a child, I had always valued my education and loved learning. My father jokingly called me the brains of the family. I did not know how much of an impact these words would have on me. Attending a low-income school was challenging, though it sparked a desire for change in me. Throughout my life, my teachers were not advocates for my education.
Poverty in America is a difficult topic to speak on; everyone has their own views and experiences on poverty. Certain social trends have impacted the society such as Family Dynamics; The way families are now are a lot different than families of the 1950’s-1960’s, In many cases both adult members of the family are working instead of the traditional husband working to support the family. Even with both members working full time it is still hard to support an average family due to working class wages not adjusting to inflation. Poverty has been increasing at a dramatic rate and the government is supporting more and more people with perverse incentives.
According to the Journalist and writer Nicholas Kristof, “Inequality causes problems by creating fissures in societies, leaving those at the bottom feeling marginalized or disenfranchised” (Nicolas). While some people believe that inequality is not an obstacle preventing them from achieve the American dream others think inequality makes the average citizen work hard to achieve it. In the article “The American Dream: Dead, Alive or on Hold”, Brandon King states that the American dream is still alive regardless of any hardships. It has only changed its definition. The American dream is no longer about being a part of the rich.
