Farming Shaped Me Growing up farming may be the least ideal way to be raised for some people, but for me, it was the perfect fit. Hanging with my dad when I was younger gave me a great insight into what farmers do everyday and how people view them. I vividly remember that anywhere we go, my dad would know someone and they would be talking for minutes on end. Though, now looking back on it, I now know why my dad seemed to know everyone everywhere. Growing up in a farming community and around farmers shaped me into the person that I am now, whether I like to acknowledge it or not. I have always had the utmost respect for people that work hard in their lives, and I have been a part of one of the hardest working group of people that there is. Helping on and around the farm is where I learned that nothing comes without hard work and without hard work nothing will come. When I was 14, one of our larger fields caught fire and burned everything but 3 foot stalks and the corn to the ground. My uncle didn’t combine it all in time, so my family and I were out on our hands and knees for 10 hours a day picking up what fell down in the remainder of the field. Farmers are risk takers whether we know it or not. We put all of our money into one thing every year, just hoping, praying, and throwing more money into it to try and come out on top and make money. I do see that part of me shining through sometimes, like when I play volleyball. When I am playing, I don’t always take the easy way out. Instead of tipping a really tight ball, I sometimes swing away at it even though I could be blocked or hit it out of bounds. I can also see it coming through is when I take the road less traveled.
