Seth Marshall Professor: Messersmith Comp 2 2/22/16 Different Leadership Styles All people have different opinions on how a leader should handle things. Such as war, people, poverty, and even themselves. Both Machiavelli in “The qualities of the prince” talks about on how a prince is supposed to be a leader and that good leaders must learn not to be convenient or compassionate to keep stability. Lao Tzu in “Thoughts from the Tao-te Ching” believes in having a silent leader so the people will do what he wants them to do and fill like they are not being guided.
He shared this leadership style has been effective for him building rapport, respect, and camaraderie amongst his subordinates. He says the best way to enter a team is to learn the team you are leading before you commit to one style of leadership. Inquire the needs of the men and women and establish the leadership that is effective for you. Don’t be tied down by have one style and being the definition of a traditional leader. Like most things, we adapt and sometimes fall into different areas of leadership as needed.
Leadership My leadership style is participative leadership. Participative leaders use a participation process through which those who are affected by the change are brought to understand the change through ongoing discussion. Input from group members encourages participation in problem-solving strategies. This stimulates the team to be more effective with better decision-making skills and more favorable outcomes (Pakkeerappa, 2014). Every member is included and their opinion valued within the domain of their area of expertise.
Upon completing the psychology quiz on About.com, it was determined by my answers to the proposed questions that I fall into the Participative Leadership group. This type of leadership group is considered the “most effective leadership style” though it is important to note that truly effective leadership styles incorporate all three forms of leadership: authoritarian, participative and delegative (Cherry). Although this was the group my test responses dictated, after reading through each of the definitions for the other two groups, I felt that I could fit into any of the three leadership styles.
