2.2 - Learners explain why it is important for managers in adult care to have both leadership and management skills. Managers in adult care must have both leadership and management skills. Management skills are needed as you need to be able to coordinate your team to be able to complete the task at hand to a good standard, if these standards are not met then you need to be able to deal with the underperformance. You also need to be able to ensure that the service runs smoothly, and daily running/ tasks are completed effectively. Openness and transparency with others, a service that promotes openness and transparency, encourages staff members to share information. To use more of their own initiative and take calculated risks rather than awaiting instruction and being spoon fed steps. Allowing staff to do this helps them to feel included and valued within the organisation, resulting in improvements to overall performance and aids their personal progression. Managing conflicting values and addressing difficulties, there are two types of conflicts that can occur in an organisation, the first is disagreements in relation to approaches to work. the second is between individuals, stemming from differences in beliefs or personal values. If these conflicts are badly managed, it can lead to a reduction in effective working and they can turn into larger problems; if this happens, it can affect the care provided to service users. We have a managers induction in place that covers all of the above and is completed with all new managers when they start with the organisation. Since I have been a manager I have actively sought further training and knowledge to help me to be the best manager and leader possible. In turn, I have learnt different approaches and styles and over all have improved the performance of both me and my team. Reflection and reflective practice is a very useful and simple tool to use to better your own knowledge and that of others, it enables you to look back at how you handled a situation and using reflection discuss or identify ways in which it could have been dealt with in a more effective way.
