Should soft drinks and sodas be banned from government and government-assisted schools ? There is heated debate surrounding the topic, with some arguing that parents, teachers, and health professionals need to be aware of the serious health effects associated with a high intake of soft drinks in schools, and others that it is the personal choice and responsibility of one choosing to drink these beverages, and not an activity that should come under government regulation. Research has shown that soft drinks are a major contributing factor towards obesity in children and teenagers. Thus, many come to the conclusion that soft drinks should not be allowed in schools as they can increase the risk of serious health problems, such as obesity, type 2 Diabetes, and poor dental health, experts have warned. Accordingly, the American Medical Association recommends that the average male limit his consumption of sugar to 45 grams per day, while the average woman should only intake 30 grams. One 12 ounce can of Pepsi contains 41 grams of sugar, more than the suggested amount for women, and almost the daily average for men. Although one can concede soda is in no way a nutritional substance, people have the right to choose to drink it whether in moderation or excess. What would probably contribute more to a healthier lifestyle for the general population is to extend the public health message to say that overconsumption of all sugary drinks may lead to diabetes, obesity, and other related medical conditions. Existing education and advocacy programs empower consumers by providing them with the knowledge they need to make healthier choices, and decide for themselves what they are comfortable consuming after being fully educated on their future food and beverage
