What is the Prize? During the video “Eyes on the Prize” blacks were fighting for their freedom and also to be treated equally. That was the prize. Although blacks were free years ago from slavery, they were severely mistreated as humans. They wanted to be equal, wanted an equal education, equal housing, and equal voting rights. That’s what the prize is all about When Africans were brought to America, whites took a way a lot of their personal life they had. Some of those things were their language, freedom, culture, and religion. Slave masters didn’t let them talk their regular language or have their original name. When Africans were freed, they could now have education. But the whites made sure there education was poorly taught. Everything changed when the Brown v. Board of Education came upon. After the case, the US Supreme Court declared state laws establishing separate public schools for black and white students to be unconstitutional. “Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus called in the state’s National Guard in order to stop nine African-American high-school students from entering Little Rock High School on the first day of class.”(Time.com September 4th 2014) This is how corrupt their minds were. “For prohibition of African Americans or other minorities from certain sections of cities, race- based housing patterns were still in force by the late 1960s.”(History.com, 1991) People who didn’t go along with them faced powerful resistance and violence. African Americans were trained not to attack. African Americans were separated from these parts of the city until the Fair Housing Act.
