F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby Book Vs Movie

Is the book really better than the movie? In many cases, people always say that the book is far more interesting and complex than the movie. While others disagree and say the movie is the easiest way to go. The Great Gatsby was a book written by F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1925, and later turned into a film in 1974. The film was then recreated about four years ago, in 2013. While similar in many ways simply because it’s a movie based off a book, there are vast differences between the two. Although Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, and the film The Great Gatsby are based off of the same anecdote, there are many differences including the characterization in the main characters and how events of the story were portrayed. In the book, Gatsby was a character with a lot of respect and integrity. He wasn’t the type of guy to let his feelings escalate out of control, but in the film we saw that he loses his temper and lashes out on Tom, when he starts making accusations that they are different. Another character that was portrayed differently was, Daisy Buchanan. In the book, the author wanted the audience to give no sympathy towards Daisy because of the way she left Gatsby. Daisy seemed to be shallow and selfish through the actions that she made, and didn’t seem to be interested in the relationship that was once there with Gatsby. Comparing this to the movie, Daisy was not as shallow and was more interested in the relationship, there was even more romance between the two. Nick Carraway was a character in the book who appeared to be very straight-laced man who didn’t get into a lot of trouble. Nick even says “I have been drunk only twice in my life, and the second time was that afternoon” (Fitzgerald 29). The film however displays Nick as a depressed alcoholic, who was not as straight-laced, and enjoyed parties.
