Facility Selection Proposal- Headquarters Library

I believe that libraries are organisms that need to adapt to survive the world around them. They need to grow and change to meet the new needs of their community. This is true for libraries across the United States and especially in the city of Spartanburg. The facility I selected for my building program is the Spartanburg County Public Library- Headquarters (SCPL-HQ). This facility is the main branch for the Spartanburg public library system, which is located in downtown Spartanburg.

In Spartanburg there are many library facilities, both public and academic that would benefit from a building plan to make their libraries more relevant to their individual community. I chose the SCPL-HQ

One reason this library was intriguing to me was because of the diverse community it serves. The city of Spartanburg does not only have a diverse ethnic community, but also religious, age population, and differently-able because the close proximity to the South Carolina School of the Deaf and Blind. This unique blend of people that frequent the library means that the service the building provides is vast. The library has gone through some renovations already, but there is still plenty of space and areas where input will be beneficial. Also, I will learn a lot about analyzing the environment and population as I decide what aspects need to be included in the facility revamp. Another reason this library is intriguing to me is because of my personal connection to this facility. SCPL-HQ is the library I have utilized since it opened its current location in 1997. As a future librarian I need to be aware of my surroundings and know what will need to be changed in an accustomed building. Analyzing the SCPL-HQ facility will mean taking an approach of removing myself from I know and determine what needs to be renovated. My future objective is to find a library system I enjoy working at and spend my career in a system that I support the vision, mission, and goals. With this ability to analyze even a building known to me will help when it is time to make tough choices in the future for my own library facility. Another reason this library will help me professional objectives to know where to look for research and information. Difficult choices are hard to make and in the future I would want to help with more library design builds even for second and third library designs as the demands of society
