The novel aligns with the film WALL-E and acts as a warning to current society. The society exemplified in the novel is a magnified version of society today, focusing on the problems that should be brought to the attention of everyone. Technology has a large influence on society, as shown in the novel. The use of technology plays a large role as well as the reliance on technology. The use and reliance on technology impact society largely because of how consuming it can be. Towards the beginning of the story, when Montag was talking about his wife, Mildred he says “Her Seashell was tamped in her ear again . . . listening to far people in far places”(Bradbury, 39). Mildred uses technology to constantly be able to hear people all over the world. She is constantly listening to people talk on the radio, or report news. The use of technology present connects Mildred from the entire world, but at the same time disconnects her from the people around her, such as her husband. Technology can also be overpowering in the way humans rely on it too much. The reliance on technology can lead to society ending up like in the novel. When Clarice is talking to Montag about how people refer to her as antisocial she states, “I don’t think it’s social to get a bunch of people together and then not let them talk”(Bradbury 27). Clarice thinks that conversations have to have meaning and some sense of importance. She thinks being social is talking back and forth, both contributing to the conversation. People in the novel Fahrenheit 451 are not very social in the sense of talking for a purpose, not just talking to talk. In WALL-E, everyone has a screen directly in their face and cannot see anything but what is on the screen. When WALL-E runs into this one woman and turns off her screen at first she is mad but then later realizes how cool the ship is. Later when she meets a man she doesn't know how to talk or have a conversation with someone. The script of the film says, “Both turn towards each other. They make eye contact for the first time”(Stanton 2008). They both awkwardly say hi and do not know what else to say to each other. This is new for them, making it harder to communicate their feelings. Social communication is important in today's world to share our feelings and thoughts. In the novel, while someone was watching tv every few minutes there would be a mix of loud noises to prevent someone from thinking or talking to one another.
