Federalism is, “the division of powers and functions between the national government and the state government.” Federalism restricts and balances power so that the national government does not have complete dominance over state government. Although it may sound like there is a balance between the two governments, there is a clear division of power. The national government can regulate commerce, declare war, and collect taxes. Along with this, the national government also has the “necessary and proper clause act” which allows the national government to increase its own power in the scope of its authority.
