Social media has changed our lives in so many different ways over the years since it was started. The more we use social media and rely on it in our everyday lives, it has began to affect how we function with each other in a society and world. We are having to raise our children a lot different and teach them the correct way to communicate right and wrong on social media while losing the personal contact. Some of the effects that social media has on our society is cyberbullying and how it cause depression and low self esteem. Also on the long term effects cyberbullying has as the years go by. Cyberbullying is the use of electronic communication to bully a person by sending a message in a threatening nature. Children are the most threatened by cyberbullying but the ones that will less likely admit or reach out for help from it. A greater proportion of middles school students are now using Instagram compared to Facebook. Approximately 34% of students report experience cyberbullying during their lifetime and adolescent girls are 40.6% more likely to have experienced cyberbullying in their lifetime (Surprising Long-term Effect, 2013). Cyberbullying if done a little differently between girls and boys because girls will mainly post mean comments about each other and boys will mainly post hurtful pictures online.
