Food Identifies: Life is molded by a few or sometimes even multiple actions. For example, an individual can choose to be surrounded by positive or negative peer groups. Peer groups can significantly influence major future decisions as well as one’s life path. Much like peer groups, the choice of what to put in the body could change someone forever. Food is a prevalent part of life. It is at every family event, wedding, funeral, and holiday. Food can exemplify the qualities of culture, physical health, and mental stability in one’s identity. Culture undoubtedly affects an identity. When thinking about different cultures, the immediate association is with food. Food is the body’s way to receive energy, vitamins, as well as nutrients. Eating habits can easily form an individual’s identity. Creating poor eating habits and food choices will turn daily activities into difficult tasks. Choosing unhealthy food will impair every movement and fill one’s day with less energy, more stress, as well as fatigue. Many diseases are connected to unhealthy food choices. Some of these diseases can include: diabetes, heart failure, and obesity. Along with those diseases and many other ones it can also cause mental and emotional distress. In “The Pleasure of Eating”, Wendell Berry states, “The passive American consumer, sitting down to a meal of pre-prepared or fast food, confronts a platter covered with inert, anonymous substances that have been processed, dyed, breaded, sauced, gravied, ground, pulped, strained, blended, pretified, and sanitized beyond resemblance to any part of any creature that ever lived” (100). Americans tend to buy the cheaper, more processed foods. These types of foods can lead to obesity, which is now prevalent in the young children population. This is due to the many, easier options of microwavable products. Additionally on every street there is an abundance of fast food choices. Many see the prices as better options as well as the time saved in preparation. However, they do not see the danger it possess to the body.
