Melissa Horsley Essay 2 Who was Francis of Assisi? What ere some of his most significant accomplishments and insights? How did Francis actively perform the gospel life, and what exactly did this mean for him and for his understandings about Christianity? Francis was born in 1181 to a wealthy family. Everyone loved Francis as he was a charming, born leader. Francis was not much of a student and would rather have others read to him. As an adult Francis was seen as a man without learning, had a romantic imagination, and was spoiled by all. Francis associated with the wrong people and found himself committing many sins. The bishop ordered Francis to pay his father and stated that God would provide. Francis paid his father, gave him the clothes off his back, and said that his father was no longer his father and that “our father who art in heaven” before running off into the frozen woods. Francis began to preach, despite never becoming a priest, as he gathered supplies to fix the church. At this point Francis realized that he needed more direction as he was gaining followers. So, he opened his bible to three different places: 1) was an order for the rich man to sell his goods and provide to the poor his earnings 2) an order for the apostles to take nothing on their journey and 3) the demand to take up the cross daily (Galli, 2002). Francis was going to live by the Gospel. Francis and is friars worked only for what they needed, only begging when necessary. They would give what they had to those who were poorer than them and would except no money. When a bishop was taken back by the life they were living, Francis stated that if they had possessions then they would need weapons and laws to defend them (Galli, 2002).
