Saint Francis of Assisi
Through a Catholic’s life, they are expected to perform at least four of the seven holy sacraments; baptism, eucharist, reconciliation, and finally confirmation. In that confirmation, it is required to choose a patron saint as your confirmation name. Out of the hundreds and hundreds of saints to choose from, I’ve always had my eye on one; Saint Francis of Assisi.
Saint Francis of Assisi was born in Assisi, Italy in 1181 into the lap of luxury. His father was a wealthy cloth merchant and his mother a gorgeous frenchwoman and thus he received essentially anything he desired. However his youth reflected that he was an avid sinner as he frequently drank, broke city curfew, and was extremely vain. Being a rebellious boy, he did not want to follow in his father’s footsteps of becoming a merchant and instead wanted to be remembered on the battlefield. So, when war broke out in 1202 between Assisi and Perugia, Francis immediately enlisted in the cavalry.

In doing so, Francis was captured by enemy soldiers. As he waited in prison for his father to pay the ransom, he began to receive visions from God. When he returned home after his father eventually paid his “bail”, he appeared to be a new man when he encountered a leper and instead of turning up his nose to the man, Francis kissed the man on the forehead and told that he tasted sweetness. From then on, Francis devoted to his life to doing God’s will. Part of that will was revealed to him in another revelation to rebuild the Catholic church and to live a life of poverty. Some people regarded him as simply a fool with hallucinations from an illness he contracted while in the jail of the enemy city due to the Catholic church being tremendously
