“There are many ways of moving forward, but only one way of standing still”, is a quote said by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt who motivated and helped America get through depressing times. He served in office right after the Stock Market Crash of 1929, during the
Great Depression, and through World War 2. He was hardworking, motivating, and full of determination. In short, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the 32nd President of the United States who went through major events throughout his life and in his presidency.

During that time, people were shaken so Franklin wanted to immediately gain the public’s confidence. He did this by proclaiming a bank holiday and by speaking directly to the public in radio chats called fireside chats. He called for government involvement in the economy so that they could provide relief, recovery, and reform (history.com). In 1933, Franklin knew that if the people wanted the Great Depression to end, then he must act swiftly and effectively to fix the nation's problems. One of the ways he did this was by starting the “New Deal”. The new deal was simply a series of programs and projects that were created during the Depression to restore prosperity to Americans. For example, some of the programs that were made were the C.C.C, the
W.P.A, the T.V.A and many others. Moreover, the New Deal permanently changed the relationship between the government and the citizens (history.com).
FDR was re-elected on November 3, 1936, in a landslide victory against Alfred Landon from the Republican Party. During Franklin’s 2nd term, he promised the people that he would keep fighting to help end the Great Depression by stating, “I see one-third of a nation I’ll-housed, ill-clad, ill-nourished”. President Roosevelt died on April 12, 1945, during his fourth term in office at his Warm
Springs, Georgia, retreat. It was around 1 pm when he suddenly complained of a major pain in the back of his head. He suffered from a massive cerebral hemorrhage and died soon after. Next to him were his two cousins and his mistress Lucy Rutherford (history.com). Just hours after
Franklin’s death, Vice President Harry Truman was called to come to the White House where he had to take the oath of office. Truman had quite big shoes to fill and was left with the decision of whether or not the U.S. would use its atomic bomb. In fact, Truman didn’t know about the
Manhattan Project until after Roosevelt died, and Eleanor did not find out about his affair with
Lucy until after her husband’s death (history.com).
To conclude, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was an American President who served through hard times in American history.
