Imagine being given the responsibility of addressing a nation, that does not at all want anything to do with directly joining the war, during the midst of the Second World War. This was the task given to Franklin D. Roosevelt on December 29, 1940. The American people wanted to stay as far away from war as possible but as the Nazis were moving in on Britain, Roosevelt realized that if Americans didn’t want to join the war, they could still help and he had some major convincing to do. Britain was at war and losing against the more powerful Nazi Germany, the Axis powers were trying to manipulate people into believing that what they were doing was strictly for protection purposes and their intentions were nothing but good. On December 8th, 1941 Franklin Delano Roosevelt delivered a speech to the House of Representatives, Members of the Senate, the House Speaker, to the Vice President, and to the American people. Franklin spoke of the incident of the attack on Pearl Harbor the day after it occurred. Mr. Roosevelt was stern and concise. He spoke on the occasion of tragedy to inform the House and the American people what the Japanese have done.

Janurary 6 1941, Franklin D Rososevelt gave his historic State of the Union Address. It was titiled, Four Freedoms. His speech was centered on what he believed to be four fundamental freedoms that every nation should enjoy: freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want and freedom from fear. Out of his four essential human freedoms my attention goes to freedom from want. FDR described freedom from want as an, “economic understanding which will secure to every nation a healthy peacetime life for its inhabitant anywhere in the world.”

Roosevelt stated in the Four Freedoms speech, “The first is freedom of speech and expression everywhere in the world, The second was freedom of every person to worship God in his own way, everywhere in the world, The third is freedom from want, which means, economic understandings which will secure to every nation a healthy peacetime life for its inhabitants, everywhere in the world, and The fourth is freedom from fear, which, translated into world terms, means a world-wide reduction of armaments to such a point and in such a thorough fashion that no nation will be in a position to commit an act of physical aggression against any neighbor, anywhere in the world”. Do you notice that in these Four Freedoms he committedly says “everywhere in the world?” Not just in the U.S but everywhere. All humans should be free everywhere which at the time not many people understood. President Franklin D. Roosevelt was in office through one of the most challenging times in American history; the great depression. This was a time when jobs were lessening and the country was in need of a boost. Being our president, many people look up and rely on the actions of him. In this specific time, President Roosevelt needed to put himself in the position of a fellow American citizen as well as remain his leadership role as president. To give the country the little boost of positivity, President Roosevelt constructed his broadcast that aired on October 22, 1933.
Theodore Roosevelt’s speech, Strength and Decency, included a variety of rhetorical strategies that allowed him to persuade educated, mature, and, strong men to become powerful and decent human beings. Roosevelt’s purpose of presenting this speech was to persuade the audience to behave like the strong men they are but with decency and manners because, in the 1900s, men behaved in a very manly fashion. However, men lacked manners and morality. Due to the very questionable propriety of men, Roosevelt was driven to address how men should act the way a real mature man would in order to further improve society. By using rhetorical strategies such as repetition, Christian appeal, and a serious tone, Roosevelt is able to show his audience how strength and decency go hand in hand.
All five freedoms are very important, but I believe the freedom of speech is the most important. Freedom of speech allows us to speak our mind. “Duties of American Citizenship” In 1883, Theodore Roosevelt, gave his “Duties of American Citizenship” speech. The speech took place around the same time that the Civil Service Reform Act was passed. It was passed to prohibit government officials from soliciting campaign donations from yard workers. So, the overall purpose of Roosevelt 's speech was to persuade people to fulfill their duty as a citizen in the United States.
People have the right to practice their religion or not practice any religion. Freedom of religion makes living in the U.S. more comfortable due to the fact that in other countries everyone has to follow one religion. Protests help people get together for a cause and even if it good or bad it should be allowed because we were given the right to protest. Freedom of speech is a painting about a gentleman wears different cloth, he is not in a suit and tie like most of the audience. The fact that one has the right to say and believe is the foundation for democracy to function. If no one dared to say their opinions, then it had become a dictatorship where only one opinion on how society and the country should work had been the “right”. If people dared to express their opinions, they will help improving the society one lives. Freedom of speech gives one the responsibility to consider what fits into different contexts, and it will make us better persons and people. Simply, people will feel safe in the society they live in.
As human beings, we are all born with an entitlement of freedom of speech or synonymously known as freedom of expression as it is a basic human right. It is stated in the Federal Constitution and it is important for us human beings to protect our rights to freedom of speech and expression as it is the backbone for a democratic society. Having the right to express oneself freely without any restrictions is an essential part of what it means to be a free human being. Article 10 in the Federal Constitution states that; (a) every citizen has the right to freedom of speech and expression; (b) all citizens have the right to assemble peaceably and without arms; (c) all citizens have the right to form associations.
