The Controversy of Free Range Farming Free range is a method of farming where animals in this method of farming are allowed to roam freely, as the name hints at, instead of being stuck inside of an enclosure for 24 hours, but they could be allowed the continuous ability to freely roam, or they could be subject to it only for a part of the day. But an issue that people have, how long are the animals really allowed out? Is it for an hour? Or not even that? Also, numerous people have one main question- is it even truly better for the public? If so, how? Even with all these issues, it still it humanely better for the animal. They get to feel, even for only a fraction of the time, how it used to be in their lives. This brings up another controversial topic- is it really even more humane? No company ever specifies how long their animals are allowed to stay out of their pens, and even then how do we know they they aren’t lying to the public about it? Technically, according to Certifiedhumane.org, some free range animals are only allowed a ‘pop-hole’, where there is no full-body access to the outdoors. Sure, this may be the circumstance only some of the animals in the ‘free range farming’ method are in, but regardless this is quite different from the initial perspective that the public is given about free range
