It is easy to be confused by different types of food and their ingredients. Adding to the confusion, scientist can go into foods’ DNA and change things. Scientist are creating genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and they might not be as complicated as society perceives. GMOs have many benefits for developing countries, local farmers, and consumers’ wallets. Unfortunately, the media has created more confusion by reporting unscientific information. People should purchase GMO foods for both the health benefits and reduced cost. Consumers should be aware of the many positive effects GMOs have on society. There is much information people are not aware of when it comes to GMOs. Don’t let the cheap prices at the supermarket fool you, instead look at it as you are spending less money to get a product that has more taste, nutrients, a longer shelf life, and less chemicals (Wax). Since these crops are genetically engineered to restrict bugs and pest there is no money the farmers need to spend on harmful chemicals. The farmer gets to produce more crops spending less money and sell it to companies for a lower price for us to buy (Howard et al.). According to Ohio State University, “a recent meta-analysis of 147 corn, maize and cotton production studies showed a 21% increase in crop yields for those using GM technology. The analysis also showed an average profit gain of 69% for GM-adopting farmers” (Howard et al.). This information shows how GMOs can increase the amount of crops farmers can produce to increase their profit. This lets the supermarkets purchase the foods for less money causing customers to enjoy the low prices. Give your wallets a break and purchase the GMOs that are far better than non GMO
